Visiting a Clinic or Doctor in India (2026): Consultation Fees, What to Expect and How to Save

Visiting a Clinic or Doctor in India (2026): Consultation Fees, What to Expect and How to Save

In 2026, doctor consultation fees in India depend mostly on where you go. At a government hospital like AIIMS, the OPD registration fee is only about ₹10 to ₹50, and the doctor visit is usually included in that. At a private clinic or hospital, a general physician visit often costs ₹300 to ₹800, while a specialist (skin, heart, child, bone) usually charges ₹800 to ₹2,500, and top corporate hospitals in big cities can charge ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 or more.

Pick the right doctor first. For a normal fever, cough, body pain or a general check, start with a general physician (MD or MBBS). Go straight to a specialist only when you already know the problem area, for example a dermatologist for a skin rash or a cardiologist for heart trouble. Going to the wrong specialist means paying a high fee for nothing and then paying again.

Government versus private is a real money choice. Government hospitals are very cheap but the waiting line can be long. Private is faster and more comfortable but costs much more. A smart middle path is eSanjeevani, the government's free national telemedicine service. You can talk to a doctor from home through its app or website at no cost, which saves both the fee and the travel.

There are two big ways to save. First, the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme gives eligible families cashless treatment up to ₹5 lakh per family per year at empanelled hospitals. Since September 2024, all senior citizens aged 70 and above are covered no matter their income, through the Ayushman Vay Vandana Card. Second, a health insurance policy can cover hospital bills, and many plans also pay for OPD visits and online consultations.

Before you go, call and ask the consultation fee, carry your old reports so you do not repeat costly tests, and ask if a free follow-up is allowed within a week. Many clinics give one free revisit, but always confirm. These small steps quietly cut your clinic bill.

This is general information, not medical, insurance or financial advice. Fees change by city and hospital, so check the official source or call the clinic before you act.

Bottom line: government OPD costs ₹10 to ₹50, private specialists ₹800 to ₹2,500, and eSanjeevani plus PM-JAY can make care nearly free.
