Vehicle Service in India 2026: Real Costs, Insurance Claims, and How to Avoid Overcharging

The car service cost in India in 2026 is roughly Rs 2,500 to Rs 4,500 for a hatchback, Rs 3,500 to Rs 6,500 for a sedan, and Rs 5,000 to Rs 9,000 for an SUV at a multi-brand garage for a normal periodic service. Diesel cars cost about 20 to 30 percent more than petrol cars because they use more oil and have extra filters. Always ask for the bill split into parts and labour before you say yes, because that is where most overcharging hides.

A basic service is mostly engine oil, oil filter, air filter check, brake check and fluid top-ups. A bigger service adds spark plugs, brake fluid, AC gas check, wheel balancing and alignment, so the bill goes up. Authorised brand workshops charge more than local garages, but they use genuine parts and keep your warranty safe. Get a written estimate first, and ask them to call you before adding anything extra.

Now insurance. Regular wear and tear, normal servicing and mechanical or electrical breakdown are NOT covered by motor insurance. Your own damage cover pays only for damage from accidents, fire, theft, flood, riot and similar events. Even then, a normal policy cuts depreciation on replaced parts. As per IRDAI rules, rubber, plastic, tyres, tubes and battery get a fixed 50 percent depreciation, while metal and other parts are charged on an age based slab that starts near zero for a new car and rises as the car gets older, so you pay part of the bill yourself.

This is where a zero depreciation add-on helps. With it the insurer pays the full cost of new parts and you only pay the small compulsory deductible of about Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000. It usually costs around 10 to 25 percent extra premium and is normally offered for cars up to 5 years old. For claims, use a cashless network garage so the insurer settles the bill directly and you just pay your deductible.

To avoid overcharging, take photos of the old parts, keep every invoice, and check that labour hours match the actual work. If a garage charges far more than the agreed estimate and will not fix it, call the National Consumer Helpline on 1915 (or 1800-11-4000), and if needed file a case on the government e-Daakhil portal with your bills and photos as proof. This is general information, not legal or insurance advice, so check the official source and your own policy wording before you act.
