Health Insurance in India 2026: Best Plans, Premiums and What Is Actually Covered

Health Insurance in India 2026: Best Plans, Premiums and What Is Actually Covered

The best health insurance plan in India for 2026 is the one that gives your family enough cover, settles claims fast, and has few exclusions, not just the cheapest premium. For a young, healthy adult around age 30, a 10 lakh cover often costs about 6,500 to 9,500 rupees a year. But for a family in a metro city, experts now suggest a base cover of 15 to 25 lakh, because hospital bills are rising about 12 to 14 percent every year.

The biggest recent change helps your wallet directly. From 22 September 2025, the government removed GST on all individual health insurance policies, including family floater and senior citizen plans. The old 18 percent tax is now zero, so the same plan costs you less. Note that group plans bought through an employer still carry 18 percent GST.

IRDAI, the insurance regulator, has also made the rules friendlier. The waiting period for pre-existing diseases like diabetes is now capped at 3 years instead of four. The moratorium period is 5 years, after which an insurer cannot reject a claim for non-disclosure (except in proven fraud). Insurers must approve cashless claims within 3 hours of the discharge request, and decide emergency cashless within 1 hour. The old age cap of 65 for buying a new policy is also gone.

When you compare plans, do not look only at price. Check the room rent limit, as a sub-limit can leave you paying a big share yourself. Read the list of exclusions and co-pay terms, look for restoration (cover refills after a claim), and check the insurer's claim settlement ratio. Strong 2026 plans people compare include HDFC Ergo Optima Secure+, Niva Bupa ReAssure 2.0 and Care Supreme, but the right pick depends on your family's age and city.

If you have parents aged 70 or above, do not miss the Ayushman Vay Vandana Card. It gives 5 lakh of free yearly hospital cover to all seniors above 70, whatever their income, with no waiting period for pre-existing conditions. You can register on the Ayushman app or at beneficiary.nha.gov.in. This is a useful add-on, not a full replacement for a family policy.

This is general information. Insurance terms, premiums and rules change, so always check the policy wording and the official IRDAI or government source before you buy.

Pick by coverage and claim record, not price alone, and grab the free Vay Vandana card for parents over 70.
